What is our PSR?
"By a pillar of cloud you led them in the day, and by a pillar of fire in the night to light for them the way in which they should go." Nehemiah 9:12
The Catechism of the Catholic Church builds catechesis on four pillars, namely what the Church:
-
believes (the Creed)
-
celebrates (the Sacraments)
-
lives (the Commandments)
-
prays (the Our Father)
In the context of traditional children's faith formation, our Parish School of Religion (PSR) is a classroom-centered approach to catechesis for children in grades K-6 that is rooted in Sacred Scripture and the Catechism. Students meet once per week to study, talk, sing, pray, serve, craft, act, and celebrate all that is great about being Catholic kids. From this well known method, however, our PSR goes a step beyond.

Why an improved approach to classroom formation?
Our fundamental mission as a Church is to lead people - including children - to encounter Jesus in such a way that they are changed. A transformative relationship with Christ also rests on four pillars, as recorded in the Book of Acts: "They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." Acts 2:42
Sharing the apostles' teaching in a classroom setting is straightforward. To support parents in consistently representing the other aspects of this four-fold rule of life, our PSR includes extracurricular content that:
(1) involves group activities for kids;
(2) explores the Mass;
(3) allows children of different ages to discuss the same faith topics concurrently within their family.
Who should enroll in our PSR?
Our PSR is intended to reinforce and expand upon the faith messaging children receive from their parents (i.e. it is NOT a substitute) and to offer children the opportunity to build friendships with their Catholic peers. If you're actively seeking to share the love of God with your children and explore the treasures of our Faith with them but could use an assist, then our PSR is for you!
When and where do our PSR classes meet?
The schedule for PSR classes in our parish family community is shown in the table below:
Classroom Catechesis (PSR) Schedule

OLGH K — 6 Sunday 09:45 — 10:45 AM
St. Henry Pre-K — 6 Monday 06:00 — 07:15 PM
St. Mary K — 6 Wednesday 05:30 — 06:45 PM
Classrooms at St. Mary are located in the church undercroft. At Our Lady of Good Hope and St. Henry, classrooms are in the respective campus building of Bishop Leibold School. Classrooms are equipped to support a blend of both print and digital media to heighten student engagement.
Following parish safety protocol, parents are expected to drop off and pick up their children at the classroom door. Moreover, dropoff and pickup are opportunities for you to get to know and interact with your child's catechist, demonstrating the importance you place on faith formation to the catechist and to your children.

The school year runs from September through May. Out of respect for catechists investing their time week-over-week to prepare and deliver lessons, children are expected to attend at least 75% of classes in addition to weekly Sunday Mass participation.

How is our PSR implemented?
Our PSR uses Sadlier's Christ In Us curriculum and platform as its foundation. Featuring a blended learning approach, the curriculum consists of two components:
-
Parish Edition Student Book for each child
-
Digital Portal with activities, videos, assessments, etc. to accompany the Student Book
Across all grade levels, each student book features four units with five lessons each (i.e. 20 core lessons for the year). No coincidence, the four units correspond to the four pillars of the Catechism. A fifth unit provides additional lessons corresponding to the Church year (e.g. Advent, Christmas). Preview a sample of the student book for Grade 4 by clicking the icon below.
In the sample, note on the Contents page that each lesson poses an essential faith question (e.g. Lesson 1: How do we know God?). This same faith question is being asked of every child in every grade. This is a true spiral curriculum where children revisit these essential questions at the same time each year at increasing levels of depth, creating an ideal opportunity for faith conversation around the family dinner table.
Each grade features a patron saint (e.g. Teresa of Ávila for Grade 4) whose life is revisited throughout the year. In addition, several other Partners in Faith make an appearance in different lessons. We want to introduce strong role models to the children and cultivate in them a desire to become a saint.
Scattered throughout each lesson are icons signaling the opportunity to visit the Christ In Us digital portal. Catechists choose from an ample selection of media and activities (e.g., songs, prayers, Scripture passages) to incorporate into each lesson.
Christ In Us is also a complete learning management system (like Blackboard, Moodle and Google Classroom). As a parent/guardian, you can log in and view your child's progress and access resources to support the learning process. You will also be able to view graded assignments and communicate with his or her catechist.
Account information for the digital portal will be sent via email by the parish coordinator prior to your child's first class.

GIFT
What is GIFT?
Growing In Faith Together is a family-centered model for catechesis that helps parents grow in their own faith and equips them to guide their children's faith formation. This flexible and engaging approach nurtures faith and helps to build community among parish families by combining group meetings and classroom instruction with at-home activities guided by parents.
GIFT employs a parallel-learning approach through twice-monthly meetings:
-
A leader presents once per month to parents who then engage in small-group discussion and activities to deepen their understanding
-
Children participate in lessons with catechists who introduce one or two faith topics for the month
-
Parents reinforce the learning at home through select, family-based lessons and activities using Sophia Institute's A Family of Faith curriculum
-
Families regather at the end of the month for fellowship and fun activities to assess the children's learning
Why family formation?
Faith lived out day-to-day in the home has a lasting impact on children. When parents are intentional about developing their faith knowledge and relationship with Christ, they naturally bring faith into their family's everyday moments. Monthly lessons at the parish support their efforts and further equip them as parents to pass on the faith in the most effective way possible, helping them become stronger married couples and families in faith.
Who should enroll in GIFT?
GIFT is one of two formation options that our parish family community offers to families with children in Kindergarten through Grade 6, with the advantage that both younger and older siblings may participate as well. GIFT is specifically for parents who want to grow in their understanding of our faith, who seek to learn new ways to discuss Catholic teaching with their children, and who are committed to encouraging others and being encouraged by them as we journey together.
Our goals continue to be:
(1) equipping parents to have faith conversations at home
(2) providing engaging activities for children to learn the faith
(3) building community among our parish families
If you delight in the opportunity to be an active participant in teaching your children the faith AND desire to engage with other parents seeking the same, then GIFT is for you!
When and where do GIFT meetings take place?
The schedule for family catechesis in our parish family community is shown in the table below:
Family Catechesis Schedule

St. Mary
Pre-K — 6
Sun 11:30 AM — 1:00 PM
Family Mass Option- 10:30 AM
Through GIFT we are seeking to reclaim Sunday as the Lord's Day for families, a day set aside for Him and for holy rest and rejoicing! At St. Mary, GIFT gatherings take place on Sunday mornings in unhurried fashion, beginning with 10:30 AM Mass and continuing afterwards for about 90 minutes in the Parish Center, classrooms, and outdoor spaces.

A sample meeting format for the monthly Teaching Meeting (held on the 1st or 2nd Sunday of the month) is shown below:
[10:30 - 11:30] Holy Mass!
[11:30 - 12:00] Meal/snack and social time
[12:00 - 12:50] Kids in classrooms, parent talk in the Parish Center
[12:50 - 01:00] Children bring back a faith sharing activity to be completed with their family
The monthly Fellowship Gathering will be held on the 3rd or 4th Sunday beginning with 10:30 AM Mass, followed by food, family activities and fellowship.
How is GIFT implemented?
These are the primary components of GIFT:
-
Monthly Teaching Meeting with engaging adult content such as the Kerygma, witness talks, Lectio Divina, difficult moral questions, and how to lovingly navigate faith topics with children
-
Classroom preparation for children during the monthly Teaching Meeting to introduce faith topics at an age appropriate level (e.g., K-1st, 2nd-4th, 5th-6th)
-
Enhanced at-home curriculum with more out-of-seat activities for parents to conduct with their children, plus additional content that explores the Mass
-
Monthly Fellowship Gathering where parents take an active role in planning and conducting family activities
-
Occasional community service opportunities to involve the entire family
